
“Thanh Mai House of Wisdom” Launched in Nghe An’s Thanh Chuong District
NGHE AN – On the morning of November 15th, the “House of Wisdom” and “Compassion Books” programs, in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Thanh Mai commune and various sponsors, held a ceremony to launch the Thanh Mai House of Wisdom in Thanh Chuong district, Nghe An province.

The event was attended by a host of distinguished guests, including representatives from the Ministry of Education & Training, Department of Continuing Education, the Nghe An Provincial Study Promotion Association, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Nghe An, the provincial Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, the Farmers’ Association, Vinh University, the Institute for Lifelong Learning, and the Thanh Chuong Fellow-Countrymen Association in the Southern Region.
Local dignitaries present included Mr. Trinh Van Nha, Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee and Chairman of the Thanh Chuong People’s Committee, along with leaders of Thanh Mai commune, administrators from Thanh Chuong 3 and Dang Thuc Hua high schools, and numerous students and local residents.
The establishment of the Thanh Mai House of Wisdom was made possible through significant contributions of funds, time, and effort. Key support came from Colonel Bui Van Quy, Deputy General Director of Saigon Newport Corporation and a distinguished native of Thanh Mai commune. Additional resources were provided by the Thanh Chuong Fellow-Countrymen Association in the Southern Region, the “Compassion Books” program, and the local government and community.
Specifically, the Wisdom House received 50 million VND to build facilities and a library, a 55-inch television, and 726 books valued at 55.5 million VND.
Speaking at the ceremony, Master Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Deputy Director of the Institute for Lifelong Learning, affirmed: “The launch of the Thanh Mai House of Wisdom today is the result of deep trust and effective cooperation between the local government, the Thanh Chuong Fellow-Countrymen Association, and Colonel Bui Van Quy personally. We hope this center will learn from the experiences of others while leveraging its unique local advantages to operate effectively and serve as a model for other cultural houses in Thanh Chuong and Nghe An province.”
Dr. Le Thi Hang, Deputy Director of the Department of Continuing Education, added: “This launch is an important event, marking a new step in the development of education and lifelong learning in the locality.” The Ministry’s representative praised the “House of Wisdom” as a creative and meaningful model that embodies the aspiration to connect knowledge and promote creativity, demonstrating the Ministry’s commitment to fostering lifelong learning as a key national education strategy.
Mr. Trinh Van Nha, Chairman of the Thanh Chuong District People’s Committee, noted: “In Thanh Chuong, the system of ‘The Houses of Wisdom’ in schools has operated very well for many years. Now, we continue to build and develop these centers in cultural houses, with Thanh Mai commune being a pioneer in this effort.”
The project’s main sponsor, Colonel Bui Van Quy, shared his motivation: “I decided to bring this project to my home commune with the hope that all students, teachers, and local people will have the best possible space for self-study, reading, and lifelong learning to develop themselves and, in turn, contribute to building a more prosperous and compassionate homeland.”
About the Programs
The “Compassion Books” and “The House of Wisdom” are humanitarian programs focused on creating and sustaining free communities for reading, self-study, and lifelong learning. The initiatives have received numerous accolades, including awards from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (2020), the Minister of Education and Training (2024), and the U.S. Library of Congress Literacy Award in the “Successful Practices” category (October 2023).
To date, the “Compassion Books” has established a network of over 25,000 bookshelves (with more than 1.5 million books) in over 3,200 schools and communities across all 63 provinces of Vietnam and in Laos. “The House of Wisdom” maintains over 300 lifelong learning spaces in 17 provinces and cities in Vietnam and five other countries (Malaysia, Australia, New-Zealand, Japan, and the USA).
