Uong Bi City Delegation Studies Experience in Building a UNESCO Global Learning City in Son La
On April 4, a delegation from Uong Bi City, Quang Ninh Province, visited Son La City to exchange experiences on building a learning society and advancing toward UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities.

At the meeting, Son La leaders shared information on educational achievements and their journey toward becoming a Global Learning City. For the 2024–2025 academic year, Son La City has 50 schools, one provincial continuing education center, and one provincial inclusive education support center, serving a total of 33,915 students across 995 classes. Son La continues to lead the province in education quality, consistently securing the highest number of first prizes and total awards in competitions.
On average, the city allocates 34% of its total budget to education annually. To date, Son La has established 160 Wisdom Houses and Compassionate Libraries across communities and schools. In February 2024, Son La became the fifth city in Vietnam—and the first mountainous city with significant challenges—to be admitted to UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities.

Speaking at the meeting, Uong Bi’s leaders expressed appreciation for Son La’s insights and noted that the lessons learned will serve as valuable foundations for Uong Bi in building its own learning society. They affirmed the city’s commitment to preparing the necessary documentation to soon apply for membership in UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities.
